27 July 2007 – Day 2
“Great breeze & surfing conditions – it doesn’t get much better” is how current overall leader Jeremy Davy described the days sailing. Competitors enjoyed stronger wind conditions with a fresh westerly breeze and sunny conditions. The fleet launched with the support of the slipway team while North Ayrshire Economic Development Manager, Alex Anderson, watched on and was very impressed to see all the action and hoped the sailors would enjoy their sailing at Largs.
Two races (race 2 & 3) were completed with the breeze between 15 – 20 knots. Steve Goacher, winner of race 2 commented “conditions were very exhilarating with the waves making challenging sailing”. In both races Steve Goacher and Jeremy Davy were battling out at the front of the fleet with several place changes as they worked the shifts up the middle of the course. Davy, winner of race 3 says “there was an oscillating breeze with shifts of 5 – 10 degrees, making for close racing.” John Mildred, his crew summed it as a champagne yachting day in Largs!
In the classic fleet Jeremy Arnold and David Brown gave Andrew McKee a good challenge. They won the first race of the day however had to settle for 2nd in race 3. The classic fleet took a few knocks in the strong conditions and four boats had to retire. Peter Clark and Christopher Thompson, with a combined age of 142, finished both races and now lie 5th in the class.
Scottish sailors Hamish MacKay and Dave Kelly saw an improvement on yesterday’s resulting and are hopefully going to get some top 10 results tomorrow. Overall the sailors have had a superb day afloat and have a little energy left for tonight’s ceilidh dancing and haggis tasting.
