Flying Fifteen Nationals Day 3
Waves and Surfing conditions at Largs
at the Flying Fifteen UK National Championships
28 July 2007 – Day 3
Goacher does it again and scores two first putting him in pole position with one day to go. Steve Goacher and Phil Evans had some very close racing at the front of the open fleet with challenges from the start line right to the finish.
Jeremy Davy and Charles Apthorp were the main pursuers of Goacher trying hard to reel him in as he put distance between himself and the other boats on the second beat. Neither team managed to achieve this and had to settle for a 2nd and a 3rd place each over the two races.
The final race will be interesting further down the fleet especially in the outcome for 4th and 5th place. Currently David McKee and Simon Knellor are on joint points. Knellor and crew Dave Lucas are carrying a retirement as their discard so can not afford a low score in the final race.
Marc Turner, RYA Keelboat Manager, who has been out on the course area says “the conditions were amazing, fantastic waves which really made for skillful sailing.” Local sailor Graham, with boat ‘FFunky Chicken’, backed this up by commenting “that a day like this in Largs gives the sailors something to remember”.
In the classic fleet Andrew McKee continues to be on a winning streak. He had a first in the Race 4 and took an instance that occurred between him and Jeremy Arnold in race 5 to the protest room. The result saw Arnold being disqualified and now tomorrows racing will be all important for the sailors. Mckee looks set to lifth the title for the 2nd year running.
The final race is scheduled for 11am and the National Championship prize giving will follow.
